Apple is working on dual camera technology for future iDevices, as US Patent and Trademark Office publicized a patent application from the iPhone maker on Thursday, reported Patently Apple.
This is not the first time the company is reported to be working on enhancing its devices. Last year, it was granted a patent that explained it had a True Zoom Lens in pipeline for future iDevices. It is evidently related to the latest patent.
The background of this patent explains the procedure the new technology would employ to provide users optical zoom through multiple cameras. It explains this method with the help of two cameras. One is used to capture the picture of visual field whereas the second camera simultaneously takes another image of same area. The two cameras carry two different optical packages with distinctive focal length. The difference in focal lengths make the area captured by first camera a subset of the area captured by the second one.
The patent also explains that the pictures captured by both cameras are saved separately on the device. This further clarifies the concept of two images taken separately by the cameras.
Apple is clearly not the first one to use dual camera, as there are other devices on the market as well that feature multiple cameras. One example is HTC One M8. It is said to add extra depth to photos, as the separate cameras capture photos of the same field, with the only difference in angles.
HTC's use of dual camera, in some way, appears to be similar to the method explained in the background of the recent patent granted to Apple. However, the iPhone maker is known for its premium quality and perfect integration of features into the device. This means the dual cameras likely to be featured in future iDevices may have more to offer than just extra depth in pictures.
Since iPhone 7 is the next expected device, chances are high that it features the dual camera. The reason behind is that the company really needs some impressive features in its upcoming iPhone, if it wants to retain its user base, as iPhone 6s did not really meet users’ expectations.
